Stop wasting food

Every year, about 11 million tons of food waste end up in the garbage in Germany. In addition to inedible leftovers, there is unfortunately also a lot of food that is still edible. With a share of almost 60%, private households are the No. 1 food waster - this must change! That's why you too should actively decide against throwing away good food unnecessarily.

"Best before" instead of "Use by".

A small lettering, an inconspicuous date and yet it teaches many people the fear: The BBD aka "fatal or inedible from". At least that's what some people think. But this is absolutely not true! By definition, the BBD indicates the time until which the manufacturer that the still unopened, properly stored food retains its specific properties (taste, smell & color). Ergo, the product can still be absolutely edible days (sometimes even weeks) after. And it's super easy to tell, because we humans are evolutionarily wired to recognize inedible food. Just trust your senses: sight, smell, taste.

Anti Food Waste Tips

#1 Conscious Shopping. Saving food is not hard at all and it starts in the shopping cart. Conscious and planned shopping usually already has a noticeable impact. Of course, you don't have to plan your weekly shopping now down to the last detail and gram, but it's a good idea to make a rough plan in advance.

#2 Freeze food before it spoils. Just bought fresh bananas and they are already brown. Who hasn't experienced that? They are now well suited for banana milk or the obese banana bread. But if you don't feel like it, just freeze them until you do. The same applies to vegetables such as broccoli or cauliflower.

#3 Zero-Waste Recipes Many food components - for example fruit and vegetable peels, leaves or the stalk - end up in the trash completely unjustly, yet they can do so much more than that: did you know that you can conjure up a delicious pesto from carrot greens? Or how about a DIY vegetable broth made from vegetable scraps?
